I watched the remake of this great film with my father. A parent I didn't see very often, however... the occasional cinema trip was something we did share. I used to relish the time together, watching films I'd never usually choose and chatting intently about their contents on the walk back home. I remember the illustrated covers of the classic western paperback books, littering the crammed bookshelves that lined the walls of his house. Their sepia colour tones and simple graphics were the motivation behind this design. The star of the film, for me anyway, was the young female character, Mattie Ross. An orphaned child hell bent on revenge. I imagined her riding the dry arran planes, scorched by the sun, dusty without moisture or life. Shadowed by the imposing presence of the Winding Stair Mountain range, looming in the background, harbouring her mortal target.
